As you know my book has a website (built by me) and I use a simple method of counting 'visitors'. Basically, every time the main script (index.cgi) is run it records it in a database (time and date that is). Of course if someone reloads the same page for whatever reason it records that too. Turns out its remarkably close to the numbers showing on the much more sophisticated web statistics that the ISP provides. I have another script that looks at the database and tells me how the visits go on a daily, monthly and yearly basis too.

Anyway the thing is this month might just be the first time that I get over 1000 'visitors'. As I type there have been 949 - with just today and tomorrow to go.

Does it mean much? Well, I haven't noticed more book sales but at least its getting noticed and something to build on. No don't go and look now - I don't want to artificially push up the numbers.

One possible thing might be to see if you have web bots/spiders visiting your page and registering as hits to your site rather than it all being human visitors?

What do you do to promote your site?

Not a great deal most of the time to be honest. I bring attention to it on various forums of course, registered it with search engines, etc. I also give talks on 'Celts in Iron Age Wharfedale' and plug the site/book then.
This November I did finally get over 1000 visits, so there's a little boost.
I will be doing an article for a busy historical fiction website that will be posted mid December, which should help.
