Does anyone know of a fungi collecting/preserving type course which runs in the South East? I have the details of one in Wales but its pricey and a long way to go, costing £275 for a welcome afternoon , one full day and a morning.

What a lot of money! What you need is a friendly local downsizer, must be someone in your area who knows their fungi enough and would welcome a get-together?

There are plenty in the South East some even free. I posted the following links and detials, of where to start looking for forays anywhere in the country, up on another site a while back but worth repeating:

Here are some of the places we have searched to find local fungi forays.

Local council and education departments

Peter Jordan Tasty Mushroom Partnership : https://www.tastymushroompartnership.co.uk

local wildlife trusts - try something like https://www.wildlifetrusts.org.uk for a list of them by county

large parks/attractions or privately owned wood attractions

https://www.abfg.org - for lists of local fungi groups

national trust - look on their main web or local sites.

https://www.fungiforays.co.uk - daniel butler of "urban dreams" fame

https://www.mycologue.co.uk/xcart/customer/pages.php?pageid=6

One we've been on a couple of times has details here:

Hello Snootycat - as well as the last link it TD's post to the Bedgbury one we have visited, there are some courses at Wilderness Wood in Sussex which might suit you - link is in the "What's On" board.

The collecting is the bit you will really want help with - drying is fairly straightforward and our pet expert Cab has got some details on his personal website about different preserving methods, which he is happy for us to turn in to an article.

Did you see last month's (or the month's before) TKG with an article about drying food? There was an idea for mushrooms about leaving them whole overnight before slicing to dry...we're experimenting with this (on Waitrose "Portobellini" ) to see if it could possibly make any difference. You could get a bit of practise in on preserving with the shop mushrooms!
