Inside the abattoir at Swedish Meats in Linkoping, the cows stood patiently, occasionally nuzzling the lens of our camera. From there, it was a short walk past the white-walled butchery, down the steps to the basement where the raw material for biogas, slid greasily down a chute. Still bubbling and burping, and carpeting you with an acrid stench, came the organs and the fat and the guts. Enough, from one cow, to get you about 4km (2.5 miles) on the train.

I guess it's good to use something that's (probably) otherwise a waste product so long as none of the methane escapes into the atmosphere. I'm not so sure about the biofuel from Brazilian sugar beet for use in Sweden, that doesn't seem a very good sustainable alternative to petrol does it?

I misunderstood the title: I was wondering how a cow could gut a train?

I was most annoyed at the reporter's attitude to the CEO of Svensk Biogas: "You don't have to look far beneath the number-crunching CEO to find the muesli-crunching environment-lover."

It's the continued media attitude that to be selfish in striving to preserve the environment for our health, future wealth & enjoyment (my preferred description for environmental awareness). One is immediately a comic stereotype hippy or suburbanite caricature thereof; to be gently tolerated with patronising mild amusement and not seen as an ordinary, normal person making small efforts in an attempt to conserve our eco-system.
