I'm running maintenance on the laptop at the moment. The defragmenter does its thing for a bit, then says 'drive's contents changed, restarting'. Is this normal?

My 98 lappy will never defrag. It's only a 4GB disk and it takes hours, doesn't reboot like you say. Have you defragged it before?

Yes, but I've always run the maintenance overnight. Since it won't get used much I thought I'd run it before I put it away, and obviously I've never watched it before. It seems to be gradually working its way towards 100%.

Arh, restarting the defrag process. That does sound familiar.

try stopping background processes. When we had windows 98 we had to make sure to not have other stuff running.Screensaver is a notorious culprit but other stuff might affect it too.

And the more you can empty the disk first, the better. Defrag time increases with the number of files (obviously) - but also increases with shortage of disk space...
And don't bother about doing it for OS X. (Although that has other system maintenance tasks, that it'll do for itself if left on overnight just occasionally...)

I assumed it would look after itself. I'd deleted a load of stuff off the laptop since it's now back to being a back-up machine and thought I'd tidy up generally whilst I was doing it.
