I once heard that a typical arrangement was 10% of turnover, which translates into a very much bigger percentage of the profit the trader is making.

It seems to me a big issue for all small traders is the overheads involved in selling.

It is something we have tried in our so far very small way to help with, by allowing traders free advertising here

When we hold meets, I hope a fair bit of trading and bartering will go on, which might entail a "whip round" to hire a village hall or something.

But it would be interesting to get more perspective on how these things are done on a bigger scale.

Here in the north east of scotland, farmer's markets are few and far between (so are the towns ). Our nearest market is 14 miles away. The charge is £25.00. We considered selling there but since we currently only have free range eggs to sell it we would need to sell lots to make it viable. When I asked for details I was also asked what we would be selling as they don't allow too many producers selling the same items. Needless to say we haven't joined one yet.

Ilfracombe charge £10 a table, for 2 1/2 hours.

Some places are slightly more and some less.

We sell into a couple of local shops and from the gate. This is ok during the winter, but nearly everyone who lives in the country has their own hens so sales fall off a bit during the summer.

Yesterday we did a car boot sale in Aberdeen. Lots of people were buying the eggs '£2.00 a tray' but it did gladden our heart to know there are people who care about what they eat and we sold all the eggs we took and were asked if we are coming next week.
