I've got lots of spuds chitting. I've got some shrivelled saved purple fleshed ones from last year, some desiree (main crop), pink fir apple (main crop salad potato), and rocket (first early). I'd like a second early to fill the gap... Should I look into getting another variety, or treat some desiree or rocket as second early?

Cheers,

Cab.

Cab,

Not a response to your question but how do you 'save' you potatoes from the previous year for use as seed this year?

Will there be a gap? We've not found over much difference between earlies and lates. Just plant a few lates a bit earlier and see what happens?

We saved some Edzil (sp) Blue from one year to the next. Kept them dark and cool but they still sprouted a bit to quickly.

I put them in the bottom of the veg rack and forget about them. Then in Spring every year I think "blow me, they'te still there, and look at the shoots!

It is in many ways a bad idea, as you've no way of knowing that you're not accumulating viral conditions in the tubers.

I take it by buying seed potatoes from a reputable supplier that they should be certified as virus free

Monkey, quite so. That's why it's usually advisable to be stringent about obtaining good seed spuds. For a few interesting ones in the garden doesn't matter quite so much; for my allotment plot I'm sticking with the ones I've bought.
