I have just totally reinstalled Xp on a kids machine. It would no longer log in due to malware probably.

I am finding that with machines where the users are less than totally responsible, the problems just seem to be mounting more and more, with XP installs having a half life measured at probably under a year before they are fubar.

Is this just me finding this amongst family and friends?

I have XP, and although I'v only had this computer since about November, it already feels overworked. Can't put my finger on it, but I am not happy with XP, I think my ex shop display laptop with ME was more reliable after four years service.
Is there an alternative for non-techi people with loads of periferals and custom softwear?

Think we've had ours for about a year and it's still going fine, dh takes very good care of my PC though and gives it a regular clean up about once a month.

I also run ad-aware once a week and we try not to overwork it, I regularly removed games that haven't been played for a while.

i tried this and wow! https://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17070

'course you have to so careful too. i used to go to Google, and just click away at whatever seemed remotely germaine to my search, but not anymore. way too dangerous. you can't be 100% certain whenever you click on anything but if you read the url carefully, quite often you can tell not to try it.

I was searching for some a7nx drivers yesterday and ended up on a site plastered with porn adverts, which is usually a sign that the site may well try and install malicious crap

The problems occur on windows 2000 as well. I have just spent an hour this morning removing a DSO exploit scumware program from a customers machine

One of those that corrupts internet explorer making its search engine the favourites page and adding lots of porn links.

If you try and change it, it changes back, and even blocking 3rd party browser extensions does not work because on reboot it reinstates itself.

The malware also blocks windows update. Though by diable browser extensions you can get update to work. At least until the next reboot.

adaware does not cope with this one, but an updated spybot search and destroy downloadable here will do.

you need to make sure all the updates are installed.
