I'm having trouble getting into my head the size of certain land measurements. After some research I'v come up with the following:

1 Rod/ pole / perch = 5½ yards
40 sq poles = 1 rood
4 roods = 1 acre
640 acres = 1 sq mile

But can anyone help translate them into concepts I might understand. EG, the size of a football pitch.. Bigger than a breadbin etc

An acre is 4046 square meters, so that would be abou the size of a football pitch, although I believe they are not all the same size!

IIRC, a rod was the length of a stick used to control the oxen when plowing.

A 5 1/2 yard stick, that must be harder to control than the oxen!!

Q: Why are women so lousy at parking?

A square about 69 yards on each side should be an acre.

An Acre is 10 square chains.
So a square of side root10 chains is what we are after.
A chain is 22 yards (a cricket pitch is 1 chain between wickets).
So, about 69 yards?

Are perches used today anywhere other than allotments?
I presume the acre came from 1 chain x 10 chains and strip farming...

Or put another way, if an acre is 4046 sq meters, then the root is 63.6 meters, aprox. 69.9 yards.
