Back in the olden days, it was common for one computer to service the whole building through a number of terminals.
Today's PC's are much more powerful than those old things and although it is quite common for them to be capable of driving multiple monitors, I have not yet come across a means to plug in multiple users to use those monitors independantly.

It's not the monitors that's the issue it's the operating system. What you are after is a Terminal Server environment. This is when everyone has their own desktop but it's all from one server, you can do it in Windows and Linux, I've never seen it done with Mac OSX though I suspect it's possible

Thank you. At least now I know what to search for.

I've no need to do it in Mac OS. The only Mac in the house is to keep the rain off*.

{* Not strictly true, there is a MK1 Mac in the basement, but I think it blew up.}

im not sure about doze but it seemed simple( from the reading rather than the doing) in linux

doze is probably simple but is likely to use a huge amount of software to "post a letter" so to speak.

would a lan/file share etc be easier and do the job?

Very probably, but the thought came up when we were off away from mains electricity and the thinking was that if we could share one machine then it would much reduce our power consumption.

You'd need something like this to do it:

Actually you'd still need a client device, which could be v cheap and v energy efficient:

We've used thin clients for almost 20 years they're brilliant, no noise no need to worry about upgrades, viruses etc users can't break anything. Blinking lovely, not sure of benefits at home
