Not sure if this should be here or under Reviews, but I think this is more appropriate.

New programme - 2.30, ITV weekdays. Martin Lewis (the guy from www.moneysavingexpert.com) goes to houses and shows how they can save (painless) and cut (painful) expenses. Some very good tips, especially on recommendations for best-buy insurance, phone bills etc. Speaking as someone who's recently saved over £600 just on phone bills and car insurance, I reckon it's well worth watching for anyone planning to downsize.

Mind you, you do wonder if some people are worth helping - I didn't think airhead giggly blondes waiting for men to rescue them existed nowadays, but clearly they do, according to today's programme. She wanted to run a holistic therapy centre and rescue animals; both very laudable ambitions. Unfortunately, she'd spent over £10,000 on courses that didn't seem to be helping her much on her way, plus, for someone who supposedly knows about animals, I found it very odd that she'd stand directly behind a horse's hind legs while brushing its tail (which can cause sudden pain and a reflex lashing out), or (apparently, although this could be in the editing) turn a horse out into a field still wearing a full bridle with bit (not just a head-collar).

Following on from the broadband-provider thread and free VOIP calls, several mentions have been made on this programme for free/cheap phonecalls to people without BB.

JustDialSaver gives free evening and w/e phonecalls with no monthly fee or setup charges, and you keep your BT (or whoever) line.

www.call1899.co.uk, www.call18866.co.uk and www.18185.co.uk all offer cheap calls. For each call, there is a connection charge of either 3p or 4p, and then for UK landline calls, that's all you pay, no matter what time of the day it is. For UK mobiles, and overseas calls (both fixed and mobile), it varies between the three, and there doesn't seem to be a great deal of rhyme or reason why (eg, calls to Australia or France may cost the same ), so you need to decide where you call most often and then sign up with the provider(s) giving you the best deal- they all have lists of rates on their sites.

To call a number, you put in the prefix, followed by the code (even if it's a local call) then the number. The cost goes onto your card monthly (or less often if it's <£5) and you will be emailed a bill.

This is obviously a lot cheaper than most of the standard telcos, but it's also cheaper than using something like SkypeOut.
