A friend of mine is troubled by rabbits where there is a covenant on the land to prohibit shooting.
I've suggested ferrets, terriers and hawks, but the suggestion was not met with enthusiasm.

A good man with ferrits and nets can be very effective !

Failing that who exactly is going to enforce this 'covenant' ? how ? and what penalty could they enforce - Under the unlikely circumstance that they they could actually prove a breach ?

I'd suggest that your friend keeps away from the land in question

Seriously though, what exactly is being troubled by the rabbits - I'm assuming too large an area to fence?

My garden has Rabbit netting all around, its very effective - but was expensive to install. A few get in, usually under the gate; not a big problem unless it is a breeding pair ...

I have a firearms licence and rifle for those ... but I also have a live cage trap because I thought that would catch any wandering about at night when I wasn't on hand with a gun. Tell your friend they are useless! I do my best to set the trap on a hair's trigger - if I so much as nudge it it goes off, but when I come back in the morning all the lettuce leaves / carrot tops are gone but the trap is not sprung

What does the wording on the covenant say? Does it defiantly exclude all shooting rather than shooting of some animals?

If the area is too big to fence then I would consider if the covenant could be removed or if it is likely to be upheld by anyone.

That's exactly what I asked.

And that as well.
It is probably not our place to pry. My friend is a gardener at a big posh house. The rabbits are eating the plants. So it is her problem enough to be bothered by it but not enough that she's expected to solve it.
A friendly lawyer said to shoot and be damned: they can afford to go to court.

Assuming the owners care about their garden? isn't it reasonable that to expect that they pay a professional fencing team to put a fence up?
