Am I right in thinking it's good practice to steralise fresh water fishing tackle if you fish different stretches of river, lakes etc? If so what do you use? Boiling water () would be fine for hooks and shot but what about line, floats, flies etc?

After Tahir's earlier revelation about the effects of chilli oil on his privates (can we call you "chilli willy", Tahir?) I just HAD to check out this thread but alas, it is not quite what I had expected.

Washing, drying and maintaining tackle is of course a good idea and should be done after every fishing trip to extend the working life of your equipment.
You mention re-using hooks but i would be very careful about this as any rusting/corrosion could weaken them and potentially lead to a fish being wounded if one breaks on you.
To be honest i'd have thought that any sterilising you would be doing would be negated by the water fowl, animals, etc who quite happily visit the various waterways you fish without washing their beaks, feet and mouths before jumping in!
If any disease problems occur where you fish it's probably better to avoid them and let the local fish population recover and avoid it's potential spread further.

I'm shocked that such an innocent title has caused such a reply.

Back to people's tackle. It's been many years since I fished and I can understand that using a new hook would be wise but that about expensive lures etc? I'm sure a few years back advice was given about sterilising, but then I agree with the fact that wild fowl would be one of the greatest carriers of plants & diseases from place to place. I'll have to do some googling over the weekend to see if anything comes up.
