I've got one of these odd looking plants in a pot in my garden. While trying (and failing) to hang my hamock I broke off a branch/twig. I trimmed it down to about 6" long and stuck it in a pot by itself - it now appears to be growing.

My question is - will it grow as a twisted or normal one from the roots up? I have heard that all twised ones are raised from grafting twisted stock onto a standard root.

You're right, Lad, commercial plants are almost always grown from grafts onto 'normal' hazel stocks. I don't see why yours shouldn't do though, and it should be twisted. I suspect you might need to keep an eye open for suckers that are straight, but you should do that with the original plant anyway as the straight plant is stronger than the twisted one. Let us know if it works: if the thing takes off, you could always sell branches to florists! When I was a lecturer the floristry department were always stealing our twisted hazel. They were really useless at pruning and left an unsightly-shaped bush! If ony they'd asked first...

I do know that twisted willow grows very easily form cuttings without grafts: my ex has a huge one in his front yard that we planted about 15 years ago. He has to cut it back desparately each year in order to see out of the windows!
