We have just had the hide cut off our slaughtered sheep and I haven't got any alum until tomorrow to start curing it. How should I keep the hide until tomorrow evening?

Thanks!

Salt, and lost of it, and bung it in a cool place until tomorrow (it doesn't have to be culinary salt - the rock salt the council puts down to treat icy roads would be ideal).

Even salt water maybe. If you are doing tha salt and alum cure I would get it in the bath and launder it as normal, then get it into brine and add the alum as soon as you get it.

or you could put it in the freezer if you aren't going to get to it for a while

Thanks everyone! Upon reading the instructions found elsewhere on this site I realised I still had to launder and scrape it before it was ready for the brine and alum, so I washed it last night and it is now drying over our bath! I will scrape it tonight and should hopefully be getting the alum today.

Many thanks again

Hmmm the chemist who was supposed to be supplying my alum can't get it - apparently the manufacturer is having a problem at the moment. I've got a couple more leads but it looks like I won't be getting any now until mid/end next week ... will the sheepskin be okay in the water and salk mix until then?

How much do you reckon you need? I might have a few spare ounces kicking around, failing that, just make the brine very very salty and keep it cool and it ought to hold

Hi Sally, thats a very kind offer - I need 200g which is probably more than you have?

Hopefully I might be able to get some by the beginning of next week - who'd have thought it would be so hard to come by!

Regards

Hannah

Its not uncommon in the more old fashioned chemists round here, but I was lucky and got hold of a kilo of it not long ago. BTW, a good source for odd chemicals is your local undertaker- if they are friendly you an get all sorts of interesting things through them
