Hi new to the game hope someone can help.

I have three buttercups. One of them has a very dirty vent
she is not eating and is very grumpy. The girls are 5 months old
and seem very happy trashing the garden and laying eggs.
Hope someone can help as i do not really want to go to the vet.

Hi Buttercup and welcome.

A mucky vent of itself isn't necessarily anything to worry about - chickens aren't the tidiest of creatures. Can you tell me more about how this grumpyness manifests itself? And when she stands up, is her tail up or down?

How does her crop feel? is there a hard lump and does it goe down by the morning? Does he nostrils look clear and is she eating anything? Have they been wormed in the last few months?

If she is sitting in the house she may be broody so does she make a noise when you open it up and fluff herself up?

Hi Judith thanks for getting back to me so soon. Tim (thats her name)is not to happy about standing at the moment.
When she is up her tail is down. She is normally the head of the gang, but the last two days dose not want to forage and keeps her self to her self.

How long have you had them? When I did notice very small worms in our hens droppings once the hen still looked fine so I don't know if that could be the problem.

Does she make clucking noises and puff herself up or if you know what a broody hen's like and Tim not like that I'm nost sure what else to say.

If the vent is totally pasted up you can wash it, but choose a warm day so it dries well too.
