I'm still finding blewits. So many blewits. The ones we picked on Saturday were frozen solid.

So that's te first frost out of the way; give it a week from that and then head into the woods. Look, specifically, for oyster mushrooms. Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotis cornucopieae often fruit after a frost, the shock gets several strains going all at once. Some of my best hauls of oysters have been a week after the first frost.

Don't discount te other mushrooms yet, though. It's not been -that- cold, and I'm still seeing the occasional Agaricus, Pluteus and various other bits and bobs.

As for greens, the frosts can really knock so man of those over, but then there's still the autumn growth of jack by the hedge, nettle tops, chickweed and the like. I'd say that it's at this time of year that plants like dandelion and chickweed come into their own, when the other greens become tough and bitter they stay fairly sweet (although always taste a dandelion plant before serving to others- some plants are so bitter you don't want any leaves from them).

It's also the time to think about dandelion roots. You're not legally allowed to pick them from someone elses land (you can't take the whole plant), but you won't have any trouble finding some in your garden, or persuading someone to let you dig out their dandelions for them.

Oh i guess i need to get back out there then. I kind of thought ours were over, it's been getting really hard to spot the wood blewits in the leaf litter!
