We now have a new freezer empty and ready, and I bet some others would like to know what's going on down on the downsizer traders farms

So what's out there for buying?

Rob of Rosewood farms is doing me half a hogget in the next few weeks - so there's another half up for grabs, may be more if there's enough orders.

Can't wait.

You lot just make me cry. I'd absolutely love to be able to buy from small producers.

I don't understand Tahir - is it because you don't eat pork, or is it geographical?

The meat we eat has to be halal, i.e. killed in a certain way. Most small scale abbatoirs don't do it.

There has to be a way around this, there just has to be.

Tell me if this is a stupid idea. An imam could train as a slaughterman. He then sets up a nice sideline for him (also making money for his mosque if he wants to) going off to farms and supervising slaughters.

I'm aware that it isn't that simple, but there has to be some way around this.

WEll if anyone finds a way I'd love to hear it. SAFE (The Small Abbatoirs Federation) have no members that do halal.

We'll be doing our annual venison session soon. I beleive Jerkymeister has block booked the whole cull from the local der park, and we've reserved our share. Several butchery and sausaging sessions will soon be upon us, but I do love venison, to me its the best compromise between managed and wild meat

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought it was the slaughterhouse that had to have Halal status as it stands, and not just the slaughterman?

Yup you're right, I did look into this once, something to do with DEFRA and the MHS (Meat Hygiene Service)

Tahir - halal meat is something I know very little about, can you recommend any good links that clearly explain what the requirements are (or maybe explain yourself if its not too complex )?

OK halal means that it's OK for muslims to eat, there are two groups of "permissible" animals, those that don't need a particular type of slaughter; fish and locusts or those that need to be killed in a special way; poultry, game, cattle, sheep etc.

The main point of the halal slaughter process is that you (or the slaughterman) are remembering god when taking a life, there's a good post about it here:

And another here:

Yep, there's lamb (or hogget to be fair) or mutton available. We are planning for the end of October collection. The porkers are a bit off yet (New Year I expect) as is the next Dexter, although there is some of the most recent (about 30kg) in the freezer (half a Tamworth lurking in there too ).

If getting half a freezer of lamb/mutton/dexter down to Swindon late October is sensibly feasable, we are definately up for it, just name the price
