Took delivery of our first batch of chooks yesterday (silkies)

The book we have recommended leaving them inside the coop for first day or so. However it's baking hot today, and whilst the coop is in the shade I'm a little worried as to what I'll get home to.

So, will NL's jointing article be used sooner than I expected?

There's nothing you can do. Either they'll be fine, or you've got a chicken supper to look forward to. I see it as win win.

If not, have you done a different article on joints that may be of interest?

I assume they have plenty of water and the coop is well ventilated? I wouldn't advise leaving any live stock on their own immediately after getting them though. For example, until I saw our hens in the ark I didn't realise there were that many ways of knocking over the water bowl until I saw them. Can you get anyone to check up on them or leave work early?

I thought the locking them in idea only applied if the birds are totally free ranging so they get to learn where their new home is. If it's a house and run then there was no need.

Coop is well ventilated, and they were given fresh water and food this morning. I am a little worried about the water bowl being knocked over early on, but I can't get there until 5.30pm.

One good thing is that it's in the shade so fingers crossed.

They will be in a run initially but i would like them to be totally free range at some point.

A noble yet vain attempt to keep the thread on topic!

As Nick says, there's nowt you can do until you get home, but I wouldn't lock them in the coop again tomorrow if they have a run.

Even with just three hens we decided to use two drinkers. One open bowl and one of those ones with a reservoir. Open one was easier to know over and the reservoir one was prone to cloging up with shavings, but with two one lasted the day. Raised on a brick helps keeping them clean and when we get more hens I'll get one of those hangy reservoir type drinkers. Not sure what everyone else uses.
