Suggesting travelling at 50mph on a motorway is not only stupidly irresponsible, it is also bloody dangerous.

A very, very pleasant article to read. Nicely written and some very good points, from a safety, and enivronmental and a financial point of view.

The only things I'd highlight are that modern airconditioning systems are reputed to be less fuel hungry than the extra drag produced by opening the window/sun roof.

And, TYRES. Tyre pressure is one of the things most often wrong with cars, and incorrect tyre pressure costs us £1bn per year in lost fuel economy.

?

Not if you stick to the inside lane and use the other 'overtaking' lanes for overtaking. Is there a lower limit for motorway speeds? Scurries away to relevant website to find out.

That all depends on the weather, traffic volume, and which lane you're in.

No, there's no lower limit, but you are expected to drive safely. 50mph on a motorway is not safe. You'll have trucks crushing into the back of you and you'll cause tailbacks. Now, I know the argument will run that that's their fault, not yours, but you can stick that on your insurance form, I'm not interested.

https://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/23.htm

On the motorway
234: When you can see well ahead and the road conditions are good, you should
• drive at a steady cruising speed which you and your vehicle can handle safely and is within the speed limit (see table)
• keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and increase the gap on wet or icy roads, or in fog (see Rules 105 & 210).
Lane discipline
238: You should drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower moving vehicles it may be safer to remain in the centre or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left-hand lane once you have overtaken all the vehicles or if you are delaying traffic behind you. Slow moving or speed restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by signs.

Would you like to explain why? I'm afraid I don't drive much you see, and the last time I was on a motorway this is the speed my driving instructor advised me was quite acceptable in the appropriate lane - and he was never shy about telling me to tell me to speed up if he felt it was appropriate.

Yep, it's legal. But, it's still dangerous much of the time.

Because you'll cause hold ups and delays, and increase stress in those drivers around you, and this will lead to crashes. Often, those vehicles will be 40 ton lorries carrying heavy things, which will kill you, or others. Generally, this is a bad thing. As I say, yes, you can say it's their fault, not yours, but there's a certain amount of When in Rome... that has to go on.

HGVs are governed to 56mph and this is the speed at which they will travell. They will always overtake when they can. It takes them a long time to get to their maximum allowed speed and they do not like slowing down, they have a job to do and scedules to meet like anyone else. It is grossly inconsiderate to slow them down like this and it will lead to accidents - NO DOUBT!!!

The speed limit for goods vehicles (exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight) is 60mph so a 5mph differential isn't life threatening as such but a 40ton artic behind it may have unfortunate consequences. Maybe matching the 60 of the trucks and sitting with them is better? Justifying going faster than that because other people exceed the limits starts to get a bit odd.

I do 60 - 65 on the motorway, and seem to get the best petrol efficiencey with that, whilst not going too slow. I would have thought that was a reasonable speed.

It's also worth pointing out that 56mph is deemed to be the optimum speed for fuel efficiency, so suggesting 50mph is... odd.
