It is a funny thing when you set something up from a spark of inspiration at 11.30am and a running site at 8pm or whatever it was exactly. Somethings you kick off with are bound to be a little suspect.

I can certainly live with he name downsizer.net, but in retrospect we would have been called something different.

It is also a fact of life with the net that almost all the good names are taken So when you see an opening, you do not want to sit on your hands and debate about it, you want to grab with both hand NOW!

Nice to see the rest of the comments

Read the link - the expression 'A rose by any other name .....' springs to mind. Nice that there is a link there, a bit of a negative comment (if I had set up a website I think I would be hurt if others suggested I change the name) but hey we all have our own opinions after all.

Dont know what anyone else thinks. Comments please?

seriously no hurt feelings in the slightest it was an iffy choice of name Probably well almost certainly would be a bad move to change it now, but as you say a rose by any other name.

Like Jema I've never been entirely comfortable with the name, but unless someone comes up with a decent alternative that's not already taken what option do we have?

Thanks for the link Deeno and the positive comments (apart from the name)

By the way thanks for your comments too Ian

The ither trouble with the term downsizer is that it seems to be a UK only term. (I could be wrong).

Although I do like the name of my site I dread having to tell people it. They never seem to get it on the first go. At least downsizer is a bit easier to understand.

i'll confess i struggle typing selfsufficientish it is a bit of a mouthfull and I always expect to get it wrong. Funnily I rarely do, unlike most of my typing.

Selfsufficientish is such a good name that I think it's worth the effort, and it's easy to remember if not to type (I had to redo the one at the beginning of this sentence and I'm fairly good at typing!).

I think we all feel the same about Downsizer - it's not perfect but what else could you pick without going longwinded or at a tangent?

OH's ma said something like "I used to make all my own bread and cakes and biscuits but we never thought of it as downsizing, just a way of living better, more cheaply". At least Downsizer is catchier than livingbettermorecheaply.com! I do see exactly what she means though - it's a pity we have to have buzzwords for such an old concept, but that's the way things are - just like Jema's thing about "ethical consumer".

Perhaps at least we're reclaiming the word "downsize" for a laudable purpose!

It's definitely a discussion worth having, and you never know some bright spark might suggest a truly excellent alternative.

what about wellieson.com (wellies on dot com) it is really easy to remember and it is what most downsizers will eventually have to do.

Not bad but we're about more than growing things and we're not confined to rural users either

We need a definition of what the site is about, and then you could build a name around it. Easier said than done though!
If i had been searching for a site like this i wouldn't have put the word downsizer into my search. It was only through the River Cottage site that i found it !

the trouble is that this site has many competing identities

We have the core ideas of:

Smallholding/downshifting
Ethical Consumption
Promotion of ethical small business by encouraging cross trade.
Campaigning over issues like supermarkets
Provision of useful resources.

These are all sympathetic to each other, and given that we are a site where the members ideas influence where we go, more ideas may be added to the list.

I don't think you will ever find a name to handle them all.
