Gareth has just gone to work for an overnighter so its just me here for the next two days. I want to use up some odds and ends of veg that are kicking round, so I'm planning a pot of soup that will do me two lunches and a main meal. So far main ingredients are onions, courgettes, a couple of tomatoes, a few runner beans and a chilli.

What else shall I pop in to make it moderately well balanced, yummy, and preferably not too flatulant! End of veg rack soup all too often turns into fart soup if care is not taken I find

Got rice, lentils, pretty much every spice we might want, unsure about spuds, will go and look and if I have them thay can go in too.

Was toying with a few lentils and a little curry spicing, but will that get boring after three meals...
Any ideas?

What about some broken spaghetti or other small pasta which can be added for one of the meals

What about some other 'hearty' root veg like parsnips, swedes, perhaps some pumpkin? I'd put potatoes in - but then I like thick, stewy soups when I've got a cold. Are you a veggie? If not, some chopped up chorizo is always nice in soups and stews, along with lots of different types of beans. Makes it lovely and rich.

You could always add stuff as you go along, so:
Veg soup
Veg and lentil soup
Curried veg and lentil soup
Curried veg and lentil soup with crispy bacon bits
etc.

mmm hungry now, like the idea of adding a bit for each successive meal.

Halfway through felting a hat at the moment, so will be starting the soup in about half an hour. I think there are some beans and a tail end of a salami, that might work well

Adding to Sean's idea, add lentils then for another meal, stir in some natural yogurt once it's in the bowl and add some fried onions and cumin seeds for a dahl-style soup.

Spoonful of pesto stirred in before dishing up? Good with beans as well as pasta.

If he's away, what's wrong with farty soup?
