Bodger - how true!

Some of the people I've seen round our way with dogs should have them taken away from them as they've obviously no idea how to train/treat the dogs.

One example is a local who spends Saturday afternoons on the beer (nothing wrong with that) - but he lives in a ground floor flat with sliding doors and gets so p*****d he leaves the doors open so's his dog just runs out to bother passersby! If you try and say anything to him (which I did) when his dog was trying to have a go at mine - all I got was a mouthful of drunken abuse!

Tsk, so you get someone like me to go along and take the dog while it is out on the street and rehome him far far away. Or you call the dog warden to colelct the dog, take it to the dog pound where said drunkard has to cough up sixty squid of beer money to get it back again.

I have to say that in my puppy classes where I take my littl'un Wilson most are labs and the older ones are quite bolshy. As has been said before labs are one of the most popular in the country because people are mistaken that they make good pets without having to put any effort in. Some 25,000 labs a year are registered with the Kennel Club. Most of these will be puppy farmed ones. Many people are leaving the Golden Retriever breed now because their temperament is so poor these days.

You've seen this dangerous pack of mine before and now you've seen our Rayburn. I wish I could see it on some winters nights.

And yes ! Before a certain person says anything , I do know that its illegal to cook dogs !

As far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with Labs. My brothers got a black one, my cousins got one and I'd have one tomorrow if I did enough shooting to merit one !

A few weeks ago there was talk in the dog press about temperament problems in labradors. Apparently there had been a scrap in or around the ring. The older breeders were horrified. I was too cos if anyone asks me for a recommendation I suggest a lab.
I can understand that puppyfarmed dogs are victims of the breed's popularity, but show breeders should have temperament high on their list of priorities, if for no other reason than that a stroppy dog is a nightmare in the ring. They know the majority of their puppies go to pet homes.
However I've had dogs for 25 years and only recently realised just how important early socialisation is. My 2 youngest are so much happier and level headed in strange situations. There is a book called The Perfect Pupppy by Gwen Bailey which I am going to supply with each puppy next time I have a litter!

I havent heard of these problems and was totally unaware. I would be very surpised if they were prevalent in the gun dog working strains.

I have a labrador and he is the softest thing ever! -BUT it has been hard work to stop him being over "bouncy" which non-dog owners may perceive as being aggressive!

I take him to 2 training lessons a week and make sure that when he goes out he sees an assortment of people - today I had the chimney sweep round and the lab was not at all fazed at seeing a man in a boiler suit with hat on and a giant noisy hoover - however he did bark once but I took him out and let him back in once he started to behave!

A lot of it is definitely to do with the owners, there are some people who should just not be allowed dogs.

I went for a walk with the lab the other day and 2 loose dogs came up to attack him and I had to resist yelling blue murder at their incompetent owner - if a dog is likely to run off at the sight of another it should be on a lead and under control!
