Take some kind of survival gear. In fact, can you take my garlic and vernalise it whilst you're there?

Is it a particularly bracing beach then?

Put it this way - you know your constant battle with Jif to convince him that he doesn't want to go for a walk in the cold and wet? He'd love it.

my one and only attempt at garlic produced bulbs that were about an inch diameter.

So it's nearly time to pull my bulbs....

...but as ever the white rot seems to hit just before they're ready. There's also quite a bit of rust around.

Music produced large strong plants and is forming fine bulbs but I don't thisnk they'll be ready until first week of July.

Spanish ROja and German Red produced smaller plants but have been hit harder by the whie rot just before they're ready, I'm not sure how many if any I'll be able to save.

Only planted music this year, looks good, loads of pesky scapes to snap off, some evidence of leek moth trying to attack it. Bulbs not as big as I anticipated but we got it in very late (december)

It's that time again!

I was impressed by my crop of music, despite the white rot losses I got a good crop to see me through to the spring.

Will probably try them again. Need to make space first.

By the way the time to get them in is 22 September at 3.40pm. That's when the equinox is.

Now thats peculiar. The old timers here swear blind by getting their garlic in not on the equinox but on the shortest day. Mind, they also insist on getting their spuds in on good friday, and that moves by a month or so...

You guys agree with late September planting? That does better than, say, December?

Bigger bulbs. Rule of thumb I've always gone by is in on the equinox and out on the longest day. They get a head start before Christmas.

I may as well give that a bash this year then. I can just see the old timers walking past, disapprovingly sucking air in through their teeth as they go

I think the tradition stems from the continent of getting them in before the first winter frosts freeze the ground. My thinking is that it's winter hardy and will come up when the conditions are right for it, rather than wait for me to get round to it sometime in the rush of Christmas, when i wont do it.
