I've just had the following email from Mochyn:

"...when I try to get into any site I only get as far as the page that says 'World Wide Web' with the little spirally bar at the bottom. Can't get any further! Any ideas?"

Can anyone help? I've asked for some further details but it's like the blind leading the blind...

(Obviously I'm posting it, because she can't get here to do it herself)

I've got 'macs for dummies', so I'll have a look. Doesn't sound like OSX and safari though.

Proxy server settings are one thing that can totally knacker your access.

I believe so, but that's just my impression - I've asked for more details if she can get some. Hoping it'll be one of those things where someone goes, "ah, that'll be your such and such interacting with the automatic wotsit. Press F6, restart, and Bob's your auntie's live-in lover...."

Umm, if she emailed you then she's obviously got internet access. So it's a browser problem isn't it? (Sorry if this is blindingly obvious, but I don't know much about this so ~I'm trying to narrow things down, then I can go and look on the Apple online help thingy).

All I can think of is proxies or firewall.

That's a good point, and presumably, a good sign. But I'm worse than you are at this!

Has she tried Force Quitting, or just doing a restart?

I don't know what those things are

Do you want to try emailing her directly? There's probably not much point in investigating too much until we hear back from her, as she may get it sorted herself.

Shutting down the programme (or application), or rebooting in PC world. They're just what the Mac calls them.

Restarting should be the first thing to try.
Its purely a problem with the browser.
Clearing the browser's cache, deleting its Preferences file, at worst reinstalling the web browser, would be a reasonable progression.

But what is she running - "a Mac" ? OS9 or X? What Browser? (Safari, Explorer, Opera, Firefox...?)
Oh, and connecting how? Modem, usb to broadband, router...? (Unlikely a home user would *have* a proxy server...)

She will definitely be connecting via modem - she is even more out in the wilds than we are!

Thank you all so much: the situation sorted itself out, so now I'm even more baffled than before, but at least I'm back in touch!

X X X :0) Mochyn
