I use two upright freezers: chest freezers don't help my back. They're in the wash house which is always cool, and I'm going to add another when the pigs arrive. I'd love to do the cellar in the hill thing: we've got the hill, but it's pretty solid rock. Maybe we could create a mound...

Might be the sort of thing a mechanical digger would make short work of though?

Same here

Whoud not expect anyone to own a digger though, I think you pretty much have to hire.

The daft thing about freezers is most 'home' ones need to be kept somewhere warm. I'm sure they should be kept above 10°C or something like that. If I don't leave the rad in our kitchen on sometimes the fridge stops working overnight.

Nah!

A well-insulated appliance, not opened, shouldn't have much to do...
The cooler the room, the less work the freezer/fridge has to do. Surely. the only problem when the room is really cold is that any condensate might freeze before draining away.
I do believe however that relatively few fridges/freezers have *absolute* temperature measurement, instead using thermocouples, which IIRC only give a *relative* temperature measurement - so if the room temperature changes, you'd have to twiddle the knob to reset the fridge temp...
Strangely enough, I put a thermometer in the fridge at lunchtime today to check the temp... 5ºC in the middle, so thats OK.

Show off. I know a man who's got one, does that count?

Yep: people around here have diggers, but I just have to work out who owes me a favour or is likely to do the work in return for womething in the future! And I, too, have cellar envy: ever since we moved in here I've had dreams about going downstairs and then downstairs again into an undiscovered cellar!

We had a fantastic cellar at our last house. OH misses it so much he keeps talking about digging up the kitchen floor. Given that the top storey of our house is currently supported on matchsticks and fresh air, I am understandably (IMO) not too keen on this idea!

Plenty of people around here with diggers too. I dug out our veg garden with one

I'm planning a cellar where our back patio is .....Roof back and sides of thick oak, ie: 8 inches thick every direction, .....As a secure place for the house for any eventuality. It's going to take maybe two years, as my disposable income controls speed as much as my lack of knowledge, but I have the timber readily available, so must keep this in forefront of my mind....
