My ducks are downright evil. The chickens and turkeys go to bed no problem---but those evil muscovies know my husbands away to day and I'm not fast with my bad knee---been playing ring a ring of roses round the duck hut for the last45 mins---the last 10 in the dark---they go just fast enough to turn round and laugh--we've had alot of rain---the mud sucked my boot off and I went full length in it---looked like monster from the black lagoon---the whole lot are going in the freezer tommorow

It must be tempting to leave them out for the fox to get when they're like that...

I know where you're coming from, Lottie. Muscovies really don't like going to bed.
But I have finally cracked it. Take two bamboo canes with you when you put them to bed. No, you don't beat them senseless with the canes , just use them to guide the little blighters into their house. The first couple of times you may go round in circles once or twice, but now mine see me coming with the sticks and troop into their house in a resigned fashion.
But be aware that if you forget the sticks, they will know and decide to go walkabout just to keep you on your toes.

Yes, muscovies do have a little bit of Beelzebub inside them

Omigod your ducks must be related to mine! I can't decide if mine are evil, or thick, or both! My hubby was away for a week recently and I started to dread the nightly "game" - was getting dizzy with all those circles as well as slipping and sliding in various muddy patches. Glad it's not just me who has this problem the books say that the ducks will get the hang of the routine and start going inside when you tell the; mine haven't read the book!

I was using 2 sticks---but between the mud and my knee they got the better of me. They really seemed to enjoy it.

I think they do.
There always seems to be one particular troublemaker as well that sets all the others off.

My muskies dont get put in, they roost on the rafters of the open barn just like my banties. Since first having muskies years ago I've always left them to roost at night, either in trees or in the rafters. No probs if they are freerange but I can see how it would be a problem to leave them unclipped if you have restrict their space.
The sight of a small flock of muscovies flying back up the field at dusk still warms my heart.

We don't shut ours up either - we have never lost one to the fox as they are sensible enough to stay on the yard, often sleeping infront of the dog kennels, probably the safest place they could choose.

I used to do the same - until Mr Fox took 3 of them
Now they have to go to bed at the same time as the chickens.

Do you feed them on a night? Ours go in no bother, it's getting them off the pond that can be a problem if you don't do it at just the right stage of dusk.
