I collected my new .22 rifle yesterday, getting rid of the tricked-up Ruger semi-auto which seemed such a good idea at the time (

). It's a Sako Finnfire, they're not made any more, having been replaced with the unlovely Sako Quad line of tinny little rifles. This job is the heavy-barreled Varmint model, the weight and length aren't a problem as I have kitted up my quad bike as the Ultimate Bunny Death Tank, and now shoot from that rather than the truck window.

I've waited a long time to get a mint Finnfire, they're like gold dust. This one had sat in someone's cabinet for two years, unfired and unloved (you would think it was a new rifle on inspection), befire he traded it in for something else. I went in to the gun shop about two hours after they took it in, and snagged it at first sight.

I've popped a Zeiss 6x42 on top of it, and am off out to the range later (the wind's too high for work today), to zero it and see what sort of groups I'm getting.

Sadly, you'd be lucky to find one still new in someone's inventory (and it's rarer to find one secondhand in this good order, as people rarely dispose of them) in left-handed bolt config, though I was told the other day that Sako, piqued by the number of people who've been saying that the CZ Varmint is a better rifle than the new Sako Quad, are planning to semi-resurrect the Finnfire as a Quad Varmint.

I presume it's a .22LR rather than the somewhat less popular .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer (a wildcat I've never heard of until this morning)

It could be the 22/250, a .308Win cartridge with the neck squeezed down to a .22. Interestingly fast and loud, that is.

If you can't find a Finnfire, I'd recommend the CZ Varmint without hesitation. It's only failing is the poor blueing that can allow it to rust. Rub it with one of those corrosion-preventing patches from time to time and you'll have a damned good rifle.

One thing with the CZs, some of them have bolts smooth as butter, and some as rough as a badger's rear. Sort through the stock until you find a good one; if the shopkeeper isn't happy then go elsewhere.

Someone was shooting those at the tunnel ranges a while ago. Ear defenders were wholley inadequate.

Well, a bullet travelling at 4400fps lets you know when it's around.

OOOOHH can i touch it? Looks like a fine gun. I have decided to set the ball in motion and work towards getting a rimfire. Captive bolt pistols have too many variables. pluss something with a little less power than the 12ga and a lot more power than an air rifle would be nice for culling the doves and squirrels.

I want a .410 also then i have pretty mutch everything i could need. 12ga, .410 and a .22 rimfire. .22's cause even less mess than a .410 and thats what im going for. pluss i just want one
