I've grown swedes for the first time this year. Variety was 'Ruby'.

Ate the first one this weekend. Yum.
Well worth growing. I always forgot about them when planning planting and ordering seed.

Anyone else grow them ?

started them in pots/trays, then planted out when they'd got about 5 true leaves.

Slugs did go for the leaves, so I used pellets round them.

We grow them too. Slugs got most of them though.

I started mine off in small pots in the greenhouse and planted out mid-summer. I put (organic) slug pellets down to keep the nasties away.

Dug up the first on saturday - not very big but very nice (sweeter and not as hard/dry as shop bought). One of my favourite veg when mashed with salt/pepper or in a stew.

In the past my OH has turned up her nose at swedes - maybe some traumatic school dinner memories - but she was pleasantly suprised with the homegrown taste and I may have a convert.

Good crops this year two varieties - great either roasted with other veg or boiled and mashed with a spoonful of horseradish mixed in......yum

Had my first ever swede failure this year. Damned caterpillars.

Usually I favour the variety 'marian'.

I'm not happy about the existence of swedes - I have a sneaking suspicion that they are only fit for cow food. I might try them now though, since you're all waxing lyrical .

They are yummy...you can mash them with potatoes if you are a bit wary of them at first!!

I absolutely LOVE rutabagas! (admit it, our name is more fun)

I'm with Ian on the cooking techniques.

Maybe more fun to say but fewer opportunities for nationality based jokes. There's an old newspaper headline from When Sweden beat England at football, Swedes 1 Turnips 0.
