When we go on holiday, we at struggling to know what to do with our 3 hens.

Weekends away (short holidays) no problem, neighbours and family chip in.

However for the annual 2 weeks away, its a bit too much of an ask + most of our family are going with us!!!

What do people do?

We were thinking of getting a smaller coop and run, that would fit in/on the Landy, that we could take round to someone else's house, and they could chicken sit on site for two weeks.....could possibly persuade them to get their own chickens

Does anyone else do this????

We were thinking of purchasing an eglu, for this purpose, or something of a similar size......

Does anyone have a spare one knocking around...that we could buy???

Any help please?????

Hi there

I have heard of people doing exactly that, in fact on the Omlet forum there are several threads about it; I think there is a thread about volunteer chicken sitters, and also one where you can hire an Eglu for about £20 a week. There is someone on there who does chicken boarding in an Eglu she owns, I think she may even be in Essex so not too far.

Ebay usually has Eglus listed but they never seem to go for bargain prices. On the other hand I sold a three year old one I had had since new and had a lot of use out of, for less than £50 off what I paid for it, so looking at it the other way, they definitely hold their value.

I suppose all this partly depends on how many hens you have too...

Cheers
Alex

Edit to add: apparently these folk in Epping do chickens:-

We have an old 6x4 shed with an ajoining run of about 10ft square that is covered that is used for either keeping cockerels apart or to move the hens into when we go away. the hens have hung feeders and waterers and we are hoping they will only need to be checked every few days....

I ask a neighbour's son to do the honours. He is still young enough to be a) enthusiastic and b) bribable.

Haven't been away for longer than an overnight trip since we've had chooks so it hasn't been a problem so far.

If you were closer we'd chooksit for you (we've got spare housing so you'd just have to bung them in a cardboard box t get them here).

Eglu's are bleeding expensive. With even the most rudamentary carpentry skills you should be able to knock up a small house out of plywood for considerably less.

I've done this a couple of times. I built a run and house that would fit in the car (take care, cars tend to shrink after you measure them ) and we've taken it and three hens to my mum. The hens travelled in boxes, big enough to not squash them but small enough to stop them moving about.

I've not done it for a few years as we don't go away now and we went through that patch of people being worried about bird flu and not moving poultry about etc.

The hens, rabbits and cats all go to the same boarding kennels!!
It takes two runs in the car. 5 cats in seperate cat baskets, the rabbit and his hutch. Then 8 hens and elvis the cockerel, all in the vacated cat baskets.
The hens stay in a stable, and I take their feed, and they pay their own way with eggs!
The rabbit is free too coz i take all his food.
They charge me handsomely for the cats!!!

Hi

We do chicken boarding, and we are in Colchester, Essex. We have the coops here, or you can bring your own for a discount if all our coops are taken or we come to your home if local.

Also board, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Gerbils, Hamsters etc

Holiday Boarding for chickens - novel idea. How much is it for a chicken to be boarded for a week, then?
