We are in the process of building a new low carbon house but got ripped off by the kit supplier who has now gone into liquidation so we are having to make some large cutbacks. We were originally going to use a recycled roof slate material from EBC but are looking for some cheaper alternatives. Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

Decra? Had a quick look at your site - what's the difference between a castlemilk and a pure shetland ram? Legs slightly longer? Scots grey is one of my favourite hens.

Does it have to look like slate, and what's the price of the recycled stuff?

Wont you have to re apply for an alteration of your planning first before changing the roof?

Without knowing what you house looks like, what the roof design is and what the planning conditions may have been this is difficult.

That siad there are plenty of alternatives, but I can be of no use without knowing the above

Picture of house. Would welcome any ideas.

Have discussed with planners and they are ok with a change.

Absolutely no suggestions re the roof, but I've been watching your house go up (and your lovely pointy dogs ) every morning from the bus on my way to work! Interesting design, hope you manage to find an affordable solution.

Preferably it will look like slate. The recycled stuff costs around £4500.

Not sure the exact differences between Castlemilk Moorits and Shetlands have no experience of Shetlands.

That looks like a timber build so why not Oak or Cedar shingles?

I have to say that doesnt sound like a bad price for the reclaimed slates.

I thought of shakes or shingles, but I cant see these being a cheaper option.

If you are in the dry, and well battened down can you not just progress the slatework gradually as you can afford to do a bit?

All the best,

Apparently photovoltaic panels that look like slates are comparable with Caernarfon slate in price

slate is a good material for strong weather
heather thatch or turf is traditional up north so i recon it works
pv for the price of slate sounds good but maybe a 30 year life rather than 100 and renail
on the do it once principle my vote is slate

Sorry the price quoted is for a recycled plastic material that looks like slate. We cannot use normal slate as the roof trusses were designed for a lightweight material.

We have looked at shingles and we are currently getting some prices back on those.
