Some local kids got hold of one of my hens and killed her.

Bring back corporal punishment.

Do you know who did it? If so report them to the police.

Similar sentiment to mochyn, b*st*rds. Bet their parent(s) couldn't give a sh*t what the like so and so's do as long as they are out of their hair.

Sometimes it just isn't worth trying to understand the mindset of people involved in animal cruelty:

Sorry for your loss Soapnutter, have you considered getting RSPCA and the police involved?

Yes we know who and it's been reported to the RSPCA who said they'd investigate - do you think I should report to the police as well?

Problem is we have no evidence, it's all she said he told me that they said ... etc. We also don;t know if it was accidental or malicious and premeditated, or whether they came into our garden to get the hen or of she escaped and they just took advantage.

I agree, tell the police. Also, didn't Mihto post something a few weeks ago about the potential for children who torture or hurt animals potentially being in some kind of disturbing or abusive situation themselves?

Knowing the family by reputation there is a strong possibility.

There is a strong recognised link between cruelty to animals and domestic abuse but I am not sure if the research was aimed this way (rather that the abuser is also more likely to be cruel to animals as well). Nevertheless this cruelty is likely to come from somewhere and I worry about children who behave like this and wonder what to do about it. Would calling the police help? I suspect that family is already known to them, the school, social services.

I am really sorry about your hen. Such an upsetting thing to happen.

They are known. Oldest of the 2 boys has been permanently excluded from one school already and moved into another.

Bring back the birch and the stocks.
This country is a cesspit of wrong doers that get away with thing we would have had a bloody good thrashing for 50 years ago.
There is no respect for anyone anymore and it's the parents that are to blame and the so called goverment for allowing criminals to go un-punished.

RSPCA called, they'll be visiting this evening and having "serious words" but as we suspect the kids concerned are both "under the age of legal responsibility" there's not a lot can be done.
