For those who have a nature-strip footpath in front of the house in suburbia:
A few years ago, I planted two apples and a peach, on semi-dwarfing stock, on my footpath/nature strip in front of the house in the suburbs in Australia. Because of semi-dwarfing stock, they began to bear after only a couple of years, and bore heavily.
The first crop mostly fell on the ground, althougha few people going for morning and evening strolls picked the odd piece - usually looking very guilty while they did it.
I spoke to a few of them and assured them that the trees were planted there to beautify the place, and also for passersby to eat. After word got around the walkers, people would come by and pick the fruit daily and stop for a chat if I was in the yard. Made some good friends.
New friends, bird habitat, beautiful blossoms, good fruit, improved streetscape: all for a few dollars. Good value.

That is really lovely , I love seeing the blackberry pickers on the foot path, had to change a style into a gate a few years back when I found a granny stuck half way over......she could have been thier for hours...they find a good use for thier walking sticks, pulling the big juicey ones at the back so they can be picked..
In london planted a lovely garden out the front, woke up one lorning and the trees ,had been stolen.
