Are there any pyrographers here? I've just bought the pyrography kit on sale at Lidl right now. I need lots more practice and it would be nice to pick the brains of someone more experienced.

What sort of information do you want? I'm at a craft show this weekend making hurdles, but the lady on the next stand is a pyrographer!

Gosh, where to start! First, thanks very much for your kind offer to ask questions on my behalf.

Which pyrography irons are the best? I'm sure the one I bought from Lidl is pretty basic and I wonder about both its longevity and effectiveness.

Where can I learn more? On-line forums, books etc.

Are there any good places to acquire pyrography designs?

Was there anything about pyrography that surprised the lady who is on the stall next to you when she first started burning wood?

Right then! I asked Mandy the pyromaniac, errr... pyrographer your list of questions. Here are the answers...

Mandy uses a Janik pyrography iron, although she also recommended Peter Chiles. Both are available from Craft Supplies.

As for resources in general... she recommends checking out Amazon for books by Sue Walters, and there are some good Teach Yourself books too apparently. For inspiration with drawings try Google Images and search for line drawings (which you can then trace on to your wood).

Now, surprises... she found the hardest thing when starting was getting a decent straight line that burnt evenly and not in 'blobs'. Getting there was just a case of practice, practice and more practice! To help you with this, she recommends using smooth timber (not ply for example) and investing in a good sander!.

So there you have it - I hope it's of help to you.

Best wishes,
David.

I used to dabble a bit....if it's for your own use you could practice using tracing paper on the wood and cheat for a while untill you are a bit more confident!

Wow! Mandy's good .

Many thanks for picking her brains on my behalf. At long last it looks as if I've found a hobby where I can use my workshop until it gets too cold in the winter, then come inside and sit in the warmth without making a mess.

You learn something new every day! Never heard of this word before but I'd guessed from the prefix what it might be about.....
