Winter evenings without a TV mean that in the Wood household we get into spooncarving.

I have been experimenting with some new forms recently making cooking spoons based on ones I watched an old spooncarver in Romania make in 1998. Those old spoons have seen everyday use in our kitchen for over ten years and seem a pretty good design, quick to make too.

I rough carve them and then Nicola finishes them without any sandpaper, just a clean cut with a sharp knife. I know many folks think I am lucky having a wife who is happy for me to carve in the front room but since the carpet gets hoovered at the end of the evening it ends up much tidier than normal.

I love the term creative debris Sally I'll remember that one to go with creative chaos which is the state of my office.

Some of these will probably find their way on to my website eventually but mostly we carve spoons for fun, for gifts and we also teach spooncarving so it is always good to have a wide range of inspirational material for folks to see. Of course the most important thing with a spoon is that it should do the job it was designed for so test driving them for extended periods in our own kitchen is important too. I haven't tried them with grout.

What wood do you use Robin.
My JRT climbed onto the cooker & after washing the sauce pan decided to chew the sauce impregnated spoon.
I was going to buy some more but maybe try & carve a few instead.

They're wonderful Robin. How about an article on spooncarving? It's something I've been meaning to do for a few years now, and your words of wisdom could get me started.

Robin, you really must stop posting these things. Apart from making me feel inadequate I am getting more and more tempted toward doing the more traditional work even though I know I will be useless at it. The spoons and bowls etc that you do are a real tribute to your skill
