For you, that sounds like it's true. It's not true for me at the moment, though. The washing up is a huge mental block for me at the moment - dirty washing up is just so much clutter, as are clean dishes drip-drying. Being able to stick it piecemeal in to the dishwasher as I go along through the day whilst wrangling the children in another room is a godsend.

I really never thought I'd say that, though - it's an appliance that I would never have chosen to have myself, but now one is here ... . I need to reclaim my OWL, though, and see how much it's costing us. The oil-heated hot water has to run from the other end of the house through badly insulated pipework to get to the kitchen - not sure how that compares with the dishwasher heating it.

that's our situation here. Mr alice, the font of all electrical knowledge says the dw heats the water more economically.
And he doesn't get dishpan hands

What leccy gadgets do I have?
Dishwasher
washing machine
tumbledryer-used only to finish off, never to dry from wet, and only in wet weather.
kettle. always measure the water first
hand blender. I can't whisk properly
juicer. I would prefer a fruit press, but this was less than £30 ,takes less room and is better than nothing
iron.

oh yes.....computer!!!!

the dishwasher actually gets used more than twice.

Can't see why a mandolin is on the useless kit list---I use one several times a week, and the only energy it uses is my arm.

Probably because everyone's useless list is different depending on what/how they cook.

because most people don't use them. they just keep them as clutter.

i'[m sure for someone with bad hands, things like electric can openers and knives are great, but most people that have them dont use them, therefore most of them are useless gadgets

I love mine. It isn't that I never wash up, but I do use the diswadher every day, often twice. When it broke I seemed to spend hours washing up and I hated it. I would choose to have a dishwasher over a washing machine and probably a cooker (not the fridge though)

Top of the useless devices for me would be telly - wastes hours of time and achieves very little

i have a dishwasher - or 'marriage saver' as we like to call it. it is an indulgence, but we love it.

Personally, I never understand why anyone would have an electric breadmaker..

@WW Pants on fire! - Washing dishes by hand as opposed to washing sheets by hand...

Washing machines win over dishwashers

(especially with littles in tow )

I do agree about the telly though - mind eating troll that it is (and damn good babysitter too )

hmmmm, like silas I used to think dishwashers were really indulgent and Bad For The Environment. But, I really *loathe* washing up and as rob says, we have to boil a kettle to wash things, which can't be good eco-wise, or else use the stove which requires uberplanning....so I think my mind would be open to the idea of one now....but not one which takes up a lot of space! I'm happy enough hand washing clothes though so maybe i qualify for a dishwasher in the place of a wasing machine??

My gran inherited one with a house once, she used it as just another kitchen cupboard!

Excellent

My washing machine is bust - I shall send my sheets to be hand washed by you

(now there's indulgent)
