Anyone following this event?

https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8578576.stm

The Eyjafjallajoekull volcano has erupted three times since the island was settled by the Vikings in the years 800-900 AD, and each time it triggered eruptions in Katla, which has an enormous glacier on top and where damages may be widespread. What it may mean to our climate if Katla goes off is unknown.

The total lack of human invention or guilt in this matter is the only positive thing.

The power of the earth always fills me with awe. We are such insignificant beings in comparison to this.

Funny way of congratulating them.

Seems to develop.

We better learn the name of Katla. Any of you read Astrid Lindgren's "The Lionheart brothers"?

Katla is a dragon of old, spitting fire.

Very apt.

Reckon it might hang around doing this for 2 years before a proper bang. And it'll start to play havoc with cross atlantic flights when it does that.

Things are happening....

https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8620352.stm

The news just came that they have closed part of our airspace tonight. The northern part of Norway is affected with smoke and grit. They may close the rest of the country's airfields tomorrow.

They also fear a nationwide bus strike starting tomorrow morning.

Not good

Very powerful to watch, and very scary. Is that well away from where you and your family are Mihto?

(And do the BBC think Iceland is in Asia?)

So far the airports closed are well north of us, but they may close all our airports tomorrow. Rather frightening prospect. The polluted air may eventually hit the rest of Europe.

And yes, BBC seems to think that Iceland is in Asia.

God bless them

The news here never ceases to amaze me. The main chat on the news this morning on one of the main Radio station was about Whitney Houston

This is possibly just a tad more important!

Just watched the footage, and the clip it links to of a helicopter flying around the eruption, and for once had to agree with BW (and Dpack) that it really was "awesome".

We do not know how this will develop. If Katla breaks open it may have climate implication. The last hours have seen the smoke/grit come our way and the closure of airports happened only one hour ago.

They now say that our local airport may close down tomorrow. No idea when they can re-open.

I'm off to watch the news.
