I have one spear hardly a meal but really pleased as I dug it up from our old house and moved it down here and wasn't sure if it had survived

I must be missing some taste buds. I am always disappointed with asparagus. People rave about it but I can't see why.

Got to be good asparagus or I'm generally in agreement with you. My own asparagus or, second best, some of the locally grown stuff eaten as fresh as I can get it, is sublime.

Oh good it possibly isn't just me then. To be honest I've never had really fresh asparagus maybe I should try.

Might still not be your cup of tea. But old, cold stored asparagus is (in my view) simply bland.

oh that is why asparagus is worth growing - it is one veg that really benefits from being cut and cooked immediately.

i also love the way it suddenly appears - its not the first crop of spring - but is probably the first in the open plot to appear having not stood through the winter like the sprouting, broc , spring cabbages etc.

And vegplot it has to be cut and cooked nice and fresh.

I often just snap off a bit and eat raw when walking past. Yum.

I started seeds off earlier in the year, now have the most delicate little fern shoots in pots. Should I keep them in pots for the first year? If so how big?

Me too. Started snapping yesterday. May cook a few today - what's the best way? Steam 'em for five mins?
