I know it's not going to be easy without a photo (I will remember to take my camera tomorrow) but here goes....

I think it must be a member of the Boletus family....just have no idea which one.

Yellow / Cream on the top
Rusty Yellow pores (Boletus type)
Stem is crackled Red and Yellow
Diameter - 5-20cm
Height is around 4-6 inches
Found on chalk under beech trees in very large numbers - seem to be growing in clumps.
Dis-colours blue/green within 30 seconds of cutting

I have looked on Rogers Mushrooms and there doesn't seem to be an exact match - a few close ones but mainly found in North America.

Hi,

From your description this sounds like it could (possibly) be Boletus torosus. It tends to fruit in the summer/early autumn. It's said to be rare, but I keep finding it at this time of year. It's also poisonous.

Mind you, without a photo it could also be something else. However, well done with your description - I wish more people did similar.

Thanks Pete,

Boletus torosus looks very similar.....that may explain why no-one has touched them considering there are loads of large ones

Whereabouts in North Hampshire are you ?

I have finally got my camera working so here are a couple of pics that hopefully will make it easier to identify. These are different indivual mushrooms but show all the features.

Hmmmm... I think that this could be something else. Could I use your pics on another forum and ask there? I have an idea what it is but I'm not 100%

The cap doesn't look right for B. torosus. It's easy to tell if you've got B. torosus (well, it could be one of 3 but NOT B. Satanas) is that if you touch the cap, you haven't got to be heavy handed, the part that you've touched quickly turns blue. It's quite striking and immediatedly makes you realise you've got something unusual. Duane, did you notice if the cap turned blue when you touched it?

Also, B. torosus will immediately turn blue when cut. B. Satanas will take a little longer.

I posted the pictures on WildAboutBritain. There are many experts on here, including some European Bolete experts. You can see the post here:

https://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/fungi-forums/74385-unidentified-bolete.html

The consensus (at the time I posted this) is that it is B. Satanas. However, the real Bolete experts have not responded so far. Maybe it's not exciting enough?

There are some handy YouTube videos which may help:

Boletus Satanas:

Boletus luteocupréus = (B. torosus)

If you want a real headache have a look at:

https://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/fungi-forums/57739-new-forest-finds-and-2-boletes.html

I posted this last year. It's my second example that created the stir. One expert (mollisia/Andreas) was convincec that it was B. torosus. He says "Boletus torosus for sure!". Another, Alan Hills, thinks it's a rhodopurpureus. Confused? Well I am and it goes to show that even the experts can find it difficult to id from a photo.

Thanks for all your help Pete. I don't seem to remember the cap turning blue when touched but I will go back tomorrow and try one.
