We cleared out the old pig sty yesterday and it's dry and sound, despite having had tons of overgrowth on top of the roof. It's made of breezeblock. We're very pleased with it.

We then cleared a load of other stuff and what we thought was just rubbish is actually a very well made, but damp, chicken house. Probably big enough for 12 hens! We've pulled of the felt and the wood underneath is OK, just needs drying out. The nest box hinges are rotted and there's some rot at the base of the main house, but that's just as it hasn't had sunlight on it for years (at least 10). I'm going to scrub and disinfect it and re-felt the roof and I recon we've got something that will be put to good use. For now, we've just popped it on bricks and opened it up so it can start to dry.

Can anyone recommend a livestock-friendly treatment I can use on the wood to help preserve it?

I think that the not-creosote you get now is okay. Or even proper creosote if you leave it for a few weeks before you put the birds in.

I'm jealous!
