Ours have been laying for a few days, we just had boiled Maran egg for tea.

Ours aren't pure dark brown at the moment, more a speckledy dark brown on normal egg colour. Is that something that we're doing, or just the fact that they're new layers?

The one that froze was a very even brown. The second one is dark all except one end, when the colour sort of ran out LOL! But a very good first attempt at laying an egg IMHO

Well done all of you and your girls.

As I have posted before - I find that the first 20 or so eggs are very variable as to shape, size, colour, shell texture and shine. So wait to judge.

Someone who had some eggs from me last year reckons his girls have been laying for 5 weeks and are laying 7's and 8's

I'm really jealous as mine arent doing as well - but I am trying to trap nest them this year, and it is really putting them off

Did you know stress can affect egg colour, as can clean or unclean water, access to free range, quality of feed etc etc etc etc. Why didn't I pick an easier breed??

All the best
Sue

Pleased to hear it. All 6 of my Welsummer pullets are laying - at least 5 eggs a day from the 6. All lovely and dark and a good size

Still waiting on the marans...if they would only spend less time chasing any and everything that came within their 'territory' and concentrated a little harder

The first of the marans - the darkest - has finally laid. She has looked so close to lay for a while now.

The egg a simialr colour to the lightest of my Welsummers only gloss rather than matt.
