Hi all I've just managed to get hold of a shed off Freecycle for use as a coop, and I need to use something to treat the inside and outside. I know that Creosote has been banned since 2003, but what is the best substitute that I can use that won't harm the birds? Many thanks

creosote is the best id say i need to get some more soon im low on the substitute of creo cote but im planning on getting the real stuff for the summer and do one house at a time and leave for 2-3 weeks to dry

Most agg merchants will sell it, I know Mole Valley do, however some will let you have small quantities but others will only sell in 25l drums which can be a little expensive. It is only supposed to be available to people 'in-the-trade' so just tell them you are a breeder and they should be fine. Failing that Red Diesel and old Engine oil is supposed to be just as good!

I buy 5-litre containers of creosote at Mole Valley for some piffling sum. Definitely the best (according to the chicken fiends I know) for the purpose.

You can still buy real creosote...but if you want a smnaller quantity ask your local farming community to decant some into the container of your size and pay them for it.... If you still cant resolve this, Jeyes fluid is a good second alternative (diluted 1to 10), but you need to let it dry before putting in birds.

In the store, at Cullompton. A week ago.

I think the farm supplies delivery people have different stocks to the showrooms.

It's great isn't it. They banned it in 2003. UK suppliers followed the ban for about 5 years, and now it's pretty generally available again. A triumph of common sense over petty bureaucracy?

I wouldn't use preservative INSIDE the coop, get some Poultry Shield to disinfect it and kill any lurking red mites. By all means treat outside the coop. Creocote is NOT the real stuff, it has less oil in it, I mix it with 10% used engine oil, then it is the real stuff

I just pressure wash the inside of mine, leave to dry then spray with duramitex. The outside gets some eco friendly brown stuff you can get at B&Q.

I use Jeyes, just sploosh it about inside in to all the cracks and let it dry and air out a bit before you put the birds in. If you do use creosote, don't use it on the perches, as it can burn their feet.

Yes, if you can get it, but if you only want 5 or 10l get the Creocote and mix it with the oil.

I don't use it inside as the wood needs to breathe - and so do the chickens!

Creosote can burn the chooks feet*. I hate Jeyes as well, seen too many cats die from getting it on their paws - NO NASTY COMMENTS ON CATS PLEASE!
