If you buy grain in larger quantities - which I am thinking about doing to get costs down - how do you store it? I realise this is a numpty question; but it's not something I've ever been involved with before.

we buy barley by the tonne, we store it in rodent proof containers of various shapes and sizes obtained and bought. those green lidded (green body) garden boxes which are plastic have proven very good. The sort of things they sell at large diy stores for about 35 squid

I suppose a tonne or two. Would that fit in a chest freezer? It depends on the price reduction I suppose. I don't want to muck about spending money on buying a grain silo as in those quantities I can see it paying for itself very quickly.

plastic screw lid tubs about 30 kg to 100 kg sized or in a hopper/truck thing iirc in a barn mouse and air tight is good

A tonne would be 40 sacks-worth. I don't know - it's one of those visio-spatial puzzles that I can't do.

You might fit 1 tonne in a very large one.

No it wouldn't. A tonne of spuds is roughly 5'x5'x5'. I realise that grain's more dense but it's not going to fit in a freezer unless it's a seriously big one.
Also (and this is from a position of ignorance about grain) storing spuds needs decent ventilation around them. Is grain going to keep OK in something airtight like a freezer or are nasty anaerobic things going to start happening?

we use a frame from a old 3 ton trailer it has be kitted out with tin plate and a tin lid. all the other containers (rodent proof) picked up from farm dispersal sales if i remember rightly they hold about 3/4 ton each. once the grains are milled it then goes into barrels.

Hi Chez - I store mine in the back of an old luton van type body.

It is great as you can load in through the roll up door on the back, and I have had a small door cut in the side for daily feeding.

I buy about 1 ton of wheat at a time and there is bags of space, but I want to get some second hand potato or apple boxes in there to make it easier - the big ones.

I saved all my old polythene feed sacks and take those up to the local farm when I am doing a refill but open sacks are more difficult to handle
