Please does anyone have a blokes [size 12 feet...] wellie sock pattern I can knit for one of my grandsons who does a lot of mucking out?
I was thinking of double knitting wool [as in 4ply knitted double] but would appreciate guidance for amount of wool required and no of stiches etc. I'm used to knitting ordinary 4ply boot/ shoe socks and would expect to use rib but cant find a knee length double knit pattern. They all seem to be 4 ply or aran [imo too thick]. Many thanks Dee.

Is your grandson a lad or an adult ?

My trusty Patons 'Family Socks' booklet has a pattern for Boys Football Socks (knee length with turnover top cuff), using DK yarn.

No. of 50gm balls for the biggest size (length of foot = 9.5") = 4-5 [can't tell which cos it's 3 for the leg and foot, and 1-2 to knit the cuff in a contrast colour)
Using size 10/3.25mm needles
Cast on 60 sts, decreasing to 50 below the calf muscle
Leg length excluding cuff, to start ofheel = 9.5"(seems a bit short?)
Heel flap worked on 24 sts for 21 rows

52 sts after gusset is finished.
Kitchener done on 24 sts remaining.

Have you had a look at plainish adult male kilt hose patterns on Ravelry ?
Right kind of size leg / foot, and often in DK.
However, probably more sts CO because of cabling

There was a kilt sock in winter Knitty called Kilravock - might be a useful guide.

ETA : I think I might expect to use about 300g (3 balls per sock) for a man's knee sock with a large foot.

Thankyou very much every one. Yes Tom is 20yr old adult with big feet to match the rest of him....Double knitting for socks isn't easy to find [evidently the US has other weights] and I'm nervous of making them too thick to go in his daisy roots. But I've looked at all the links and will actually have engage my own brain to work it all out. Sure to do me good. One day I may even show the final result- but not before autumn because I have other stuff to do.

Hi Dee
I knit most of my workboot socks in DK, and I use Patons Diploma Gold DK, widely available in the UK, but not advertised as sock yarn.

It's 55% wool, 40% nylon. Washes and wears well.

Other option might be the Regia 6-ply/8-ply (whichever it is that isn;t their 3 or 4 ply)

Sock yarn is usually a wool/nylon mix designed for use as socks (really?! ) So anything described as sock yarn is pretty certainly going to be sock weight. Any dk yarn that's a 70/30 (ish) wool/nylon mix will do fine.

Hi everyone, thanks for your help. A friend has lent me her vintage Woolcraft book [circa1955] which has plenty of men's socks including dk golf socks for 11+ inch feet... These should give me a toe hold -although I may need a size larger needles as fellers come bigger [fatter] nowadays. I intend to use Lidl's 4ply double as I bought quite a stash in the autumn. Mustn't go shopping until I've used what I've got.! Thanks again
