You need more memory.

(See what I did there? Did I make a geek joke?)

One thing I don't think I've mentioned is the value of mulch. We've had no drought issues even though we don't water anything, and the amount of split cherries ids (so far() much less than I anticipated. I reckon the mulch (around 10 cm x 1 mtr, we could do with making it wider) helps with both issues.

Another note is that most of the older varieties are soft, whereas all new ones are hard for less bruising in transport and a crisp texture, the soft varieties (e.g. Noir de Guben) have suffered much less from splitting than the new ones.

Just to prove me wrong today's harvest includes Kordia and Stella, both modern varieties that have not cracked, both delicious too. Summer Sun (another modern) has cracked really badly.

Of all our varieties so far I couldn't recommend Yellow Spanish; it can't get much riper but it still doesn't taste nice and the skin is tough and leathery.

Given that you're going to have tons of fruit, what are you going to do with it all? There's only so much jam you can need, so do you have an outlet?

We're only picking 1-2kg or so a day, no problems disposing of that ourselves. Next year should be when we need to decide how to dispose of our surplus.

1-2kg of cherries per day, that's fine, but you've apricots, and plums and watermelons, probably. All for domestic consumption?

Apricots will be fine, it looked to be a huge set but bacterial canker killed a lot. Plums will be the first crop that we have a surplus on, I guess we'll do what we used to do when we had a veg plot; sell the surplus at school and give the funds to the pre-school.

I dread to think what state the toilet might get into if we ate all our plums.

What mulches do you use and is there anything you'd recommend? It's something I must sort out for our trees but I'd like to keep the costs down.

(I might split this off into another thread if you don't mind).

A cherries-and-birds tip from our rural French neighbours. Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle, attach some cord so the bottle can be suspended upside down in the tree, fairly high-up. Leave the lid off (which is now the bottom of the contraption) for drainage. 1/3-fill with moth-balls.

It's meant to keep the birds off, especially the middle-sized to large ones.

This year, our neighbour did this to our tree, and it was still heavily-laden when my hubby was out there this last weekend; neighbours had been instructed to harvest, so they were duly so-doing. I reckon they'd have got more than 100 kilos off that one tree!! Admittedly it's a large old tree, but even so. I picked about 40 kilos to bring home a couple of weeks ago, and had hardly touched the fruit on the tree at all!

Might be coincidence, but worth a try for those who can't net their trees?

We've been harvesting Summer Sun for a few days now, lovely tasty huge cherries but ALL split. The local farm shop sells these but they spray them against splitting
