Sorry to hear about your father. Glad the cherries gave you the space you needed to cope with it.

I'm sorry for your loss Tahir.

My once approaching bumper crop of apples is being ruined by hundreds of jackdaws who apparently like an aperitif of fruit before descending on my chickens food.

Thanks.

Harvested Penny today, about 15 kilos of which only 3kg were split and about 1.5 had brown rot or wasp damage (big issue once the cherries split). Good tasty dark red cherry.

This was off 1 tree, got another 5 to harvest

I envy you your cherries I've never had more than a handful (thanks to blackbirds) and ended up cutting down three trees. That must have been well over 5 years ago but this year we have loads of seedling trees where the morello/nabella tree was. I don't know if that was a dormancy that needed near-drowning for eighteen months to break, or if the birds recently brought fruit from neighbouring trees and dropped the stones where the trees used to be. I have some holes in the hedge that they'll fit into nicely.
Birds will be glad I'm supplying them with more fruit, but I bet it still won't keep them off mine.

After none last year we seem to have more wasps than ever, and they're fearless too. I think I'll be wearing good leather gloves for a lot of the fruit picking.

Got proper stung on Monday, there was a wasps nest in the ground by a cherry tree, over the weekend a badger had excavated it, as you can imagine they weren't best pleased! Only 3 stings but they were up me shirt and everything.

so far, we've hardly seen a wasp this year, I just hope that it continues when we start pressing apples.

Harvested Merton Late today, well it was 6:00 this morning but...

It's quite a small white cherry. Too small for people to buy I'd say, loads of it though.

Stella is now ripe (very dark) but loads of splits and brown rot, not much worth picking although the crop was huge

sorry to hear about your Dad, Tahir.

re the split fruit - can it be used for jam/chutney making?

wasps just turning up here - attracted to the raspberry patch where the moist weather is causing some fruit to rot - I hate wasps... bumper raspberry crop though - and still harvesting lots daily

Thanks guys. Splits are fine for jam we've got about 20 kg in the freezer now but if you don't get them quick then the wasps get in there a d make a proper mess
