Partly due to using threads with different twists, and a lot to do with inexperience, my latest attempt at tablet weaving is a bit kinky with a tendency to twist. Would a steam iron be a good or bad idea? It's all wool afaict.

I'd try blocking first ie spray with water mist and pin out to dry. Then I'd try steam but holding it above it with pressing cloth

Not quite sure what to pin it to. It needs to be something I can stick pins in, but be stiff enough to hold the band in shape. It's kind of a contradiction in itself.

pin to a bed or sofa, usually works well. If its a case of not having set the cards up to counter the natural twist that tablet weaving gives a piece it may keep spiralling up even with blocking, in which case the best bet is to sew it onto something substantial enough to not be affected by this

I have a cheap toy chest made from wood shoddy enough to stick pins in. Works quite well or sofa, use pins with large heads so you can sink them right in

Aha! I think I may have one lurking somewhere.

Pins and furniture could have painful consequences. I repeated the pattern equally forwards and back, it's just that one side is looser than the other, plus the occasional kink when I let out more warp, or just plain messed up the weft tension.
I'll give the cork board a go, and if it doesn't settle down, I'll have to use it on the peplos rather than the underdress. Thanks all.

its not just repeating the pattern, did you set the tablets so that half face right and half face left? You can either do this ///\\\ or /\/\/\ or in various other combinations as it suits your pattern, but doing that will solve the twirling up nicely

Yes, I had a plain pair /\ on each side, the next three in on each side flip every four rows, only the middle two aren't paired and go for a long time before flipping /\/////\\\/\ . It doesn't make any difference which way they are twisting though, the braid is twisting one way only. It's twirling because one side is slightly longer than the other.

Actually just sitting here playying with it, tugging it about, seems to be improving it. Hopefully it will felt a bit, and hold the better shape.

Having never heard of tablet weaving/braid his thread looked pure gibberish so of course I had to google

looks fantastic and now I want a go

Is it similar to stick weaving? she asks, suddenly remembering that she has a kit for that unused and untried and that maybe she ought to play with that first

No need to buy any kit, except maybe some string and a pack of cards. Start with egyptian diagonals, setting up is much easier, and there are still some fun patterns to play around with for all that it's much simpler.

*Goes away to google stick weaving*
