Muttface managed to roll in something nasty today and had to be washed. This (with wet rainy walks and beach-bothering) is a rare event for us and we had no dog shampoo in the house as we last used it about 3 years ago when a friend (canine) chased her in to the fishpond.

We plumped for Original Source Lemon over Fairy Liquid but I would like to have something dog-suitable in the house for future Incidents in case she's planning to make a habit of it

Any recommendations for brands/types/ingredients? Or is human stuff OK? She is a pretty robust old mutt with no known problems apart from being terminally stupid and clumsy.

Pond or stream water generally does the trick here.

I use eqyss microtek shampoo. Having a dobermann bitch who loves eau de fox poop in preference to chanel no 5 and usually at least once a month. I have tried everything going. Never found the tomato sauce worked, nor vinegar. Eqyss has been my salvation...

You can use it on people, horses, dogs, and I have washed chicken and geese feet in it too when trying to ind reason for a limp.
We used to keep it in the campervan and used it as shower, shampoo you name it! It does not sting on cuts etc- I know as I used it to degunk my hand after carpal tunnel surgery. Oh and it smells ok too...

Like most dogs I know she keeps her head above water when swimming so natural water won't really cut the mustard I'm afraid - and fox mess is pretty persistant and not an aroma I appreciate around the house.

Rosie - thanks for that, I have heard about that and will bear it in mind next time...I just hope being a Labrador she doesn't see it as seasoning and start trying to lick her own ears

Thanks TTH - that sounds very much the kind of thing I am after. Our foxy friends were clearly at the front of the queue when God was handing out the bodily perfumes...

LOL weren't they just! I have a radar sense of smell for it.

Maple tends to smear it down the side of her face, her ears, and down a shoulder. I have also had success using a wet rag wash using the shampoo for the times- rare I might add- when I have seen her do the happy dance of fox poo application...bellowed at her to "leave it" and interrupted the full smear potential.

Why do they do it? It's obviously some sort of innate behaviour, but what's the evolutionary advantage to it?

we have a locally made bar of kitchen soap which contains coffee- It's great for getting garlic smell off your hands. I'm guessing it would be great for getting smells off pets too

Seriously, tomato ketchup gets rid of the smell of fox poo.

I need a dog shampoo for a retreiver with what appears to be a fungal thingy going on in the skin. Weve been back and forward to the veets with no answer.
Red (very well licked underbelly) and on his back if I comb him there are small areas where the skin seems to have got some sort of dandruffy scabs attached to the skin.
He likes being combed, but the dander it causes is horrible. Talk about hoovering the carpet afterwards...

Would head & shoulders do the trick?

See my post above, the tea tree element seems to be beneficial.

Or a handy livestock drinking trough.
