It is illegal for a car to be on the public highway without a valid tax disc, though.

Dammit - and there was I thinking that I might buy one of those for Jack (aged 17)

Thanks for the rest of the info about the car insurance groups though - that was very helpful

That was helpful about the insurance groups - I may be in a better position to buy Sam a car next year, so knowing what is a cheaper insurance risk is handy

The vehicle of choice when I was at skool was one of these.
I expect the insurance on them is still relatively cheap...

Try Collingwood for insurance for Learners. You can insure with them as an add-on for your car or for juniors own vehicle. We paid £240 for 84 days on sons car. You have to cancel when they pass and it doesn't count towards no claims.

After passing try comparison sites Sabre came out cheapest for our son, we had loads of quotes from the most expensive of £5950 from Aviva , CoverBox was £4070 and the best I could find was just over £3000. I spent a whole afternoon trying to get insurance sorted. We were advised to add both parents onto policy to bring price down a bit.

I tried to add other son to my Fiesta 5 years ago and was quoted an extra £2000 so it made £3000 for his own car seem reasonable.

I guess it depends if Jack really needs to drive now, it might be worth waiting till he's older and judged to be less of a risk .
Also some companys won't quote for a 17 year old e.g.Tesco which is meant to be good for young drivers
