We are having some new internal doors fitted- pine. Is it better to oil them than use a water based varnish. I'm not very neat at painting. Will the wood darken more after oiling than varnishing?

We treat bare wood that we would not want varnished with 3 parts white spirit and one part linseed oil - it nourishes the wood and although initially it will darken and bring out the grain it soon dries and does not alter the colour drastically. I suggest doing a test strip - say on the spine of the door first. Sometimes a second treatment is even better.

seconded, or Danish oil....pretty much the same thing though
