Depends what you want to do with it and what you can get. For a quick burn up, seasoned birch or willow are good, but both are inclined to rot soon after seasoning so are a bit of a pain. Ash is the best general purpose wood and will burn green as well as seasoned. Beech is another good all rounder but has to be well seasoned. Oak will burn a long time.
My favourite would be ash and beech, but we also sometimes burn hazel, or any other hardwood going, as we get the stuff we can't sell.
Like Bulworthy, we make charcoal, but that is usually slightly undersized firewood, often hazel from restoring seriously overstood coppice, a bit of thin ash from same source, and the bit that are just too wiggly to go through the firewood processer. |
